Election time in Buenos Aires. I don't know a lot about politics and my experience of elections to date has been limited to the UK and the US: the ridiculous TV footage of flag and banner waving patriots at the US elections at one end of the scale; the more than slightly dull rhetoric of the UK parliamentary elections on the other.
Obviously the Scottish elections are totally different, thrill-a-minute affairs, enjoyed and loved by one and all.
The Argentine mayoral elections have just been and gone and I have only just stopped laughing. Macri v Filmus. I do not of course pretend to have ever heard of either of these fine chaps prior to a week or so ago, but even with my ignorance it was impossible not to pick the winner.
Macri is loaded and handsome, recently shaved his formerly hilarious moustache, is the owner of Boca Juniors, who just won the Copa Libertadores, and has box set of beautiful daughters.
Filmus has a beard. Yeah, I know. A beard.
Icing on the cake: the manager of rival team San Lorenzo (who just won the league title) spoke in praise of Macri as the right man to be mayor. It's hard to imagine the opinion of Kenny Dalgliesh being sought by the press regarding whether Gordon Brown had his approval as the next PM.
Final note, however, has to go to Macri's campaign slogan. You would think that the posters were a sequel to The Anchorman, with Macri's big Ron Burgundy-esque moustache adorning bilboards across the city, complete with the OUTSTANDING catchphrase: 'Va a estar bueno, Bunos Aires', complete with a wink and a gun.
'It's gonna be good, Buenos Aires.'
