And to continue the theme. Other suggestions more than welcome:
1. Intacto (2001, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo)
Luck, broken noses and the sort of underworld that you believed in as a kid and never thought you'd believe in again.
2. Pan's Labyrinth (2007, Guillermo del Toro)
Being an avid hater of fantasy I watched this after someone texted into The Mark Kermode's Show and said about this film, 'I never expected to feel as immersed in anything as I had when I was a child reading the Narnia novels. I never thought I would be transported in such a way again as an adult...'
3. Butterfly's Tongue (1999, Jose Lius Cuerda)
Like the above, ostensibly about growing up around the destruction of fasicsm, but also about a wee boy's relationship with the teacher he loves.
4. Amores Perros (2000, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu)
The first, best and most raw of the inter-locking stroylines from this director (21 Grams, Babel)
5. Y Tu Mama Tambien (1999, Alfonso Cuaron)
Filth, from the guy who directed Children of Men, which was brilliant, although a lot people didn't seem to realise that.
Also excellent: Volver, Talk to Her and Abres los Ojos (all Pedro Almodovar)
In no way worthy of mention was: Bad Education (also Almodovar).
Did you just post this? Spooky!
